Can we use SVG (Scalable Vector graphics) for HTML Boost docs?

In adding new functions and distributions to Boost.Math, I've become dissatisfied with diagrams and equations using PNG. They are either large and/or fuzzy :-( And they get fuzzier if you expand them :-(( All browsers now support native display of SVG (Scalable Vector graphics) quite well *except* older versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE9 displays SVG OK). So we are still producing HTML versions of the Boost.Math docs using embedded PNG equations and diagrams. So everyone has to endure poor quality diagrams and equations, just so that a few MS IE<9 users can see the diagrams. 1 I'd like to have views on when we can disregard the Luddites and use SVG throughout? We'd also like to use MathML to display equations, saving authors a lot of effort and much reduced file sizes. All current versions of browsers *except Microsoft IE - even IE9* also support MathML. 2 I'd like views on using MathML - with the downside that all IE users would not see equations displayed? (Everyone can view the PDF version - which uses SVG, so displays nicely even when magnified). Thank you. Paul --- Paul A. [release, heap] bug fix merge request

Hello all, I would like to share my thoughts about the subgraph facility provided in the graph library. I have dived in it during the past few days because it looked nice, and it seemed to do what I was willing to do (that is, being able to work on various parts of the root graph while maintaining useful invariant). However, I have stumbled on surprising difficulties (I mean I would not have anticipated them from a boost component) : - The subgraph does not support serialization. In my opinion, it is a key feature for any kind of container. I found a broken version on the web and (as far as I can tell) fixed it, but it still seems to me that it is lacking from the original component. - The copy constructor is broken (see https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/6564 but I see my comment on the second necessary patch was not sent, the bottom line is the original copy constructor led to errors when working on the copied graph). It is a central function, the fact that it has been broken without anyone but me noticing thus far leads me to think that a/ I am even less competent than I think I am in programming or b/ not many people use subgraph. - The remove_vertex is not implemented, and will not be (see https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/4752 ). I was again very surprised when I discovered that, it was really an obvious function, the kind that justify for me the use of subgraph. And, reading further on the commentary for that "wont fix bug", the suggestion from jewillco of using a filtered_graph instead is perfectly relevant for my case. Nevertheless, I would rather have read such suggestion on the doc before chosing my component than at this quite late point. So I have one question and one suggestion to you boost (graph (subgraph)) developers : - Don't you think, given the lack of tests/users and the the missing features, that subgraph should leave the library ? - I think, if it stays, that the documentation should emphasize these points, and especially the last point : that filtered_graph is often a better solution. As a final note, I feel a little bit out of my place since I have absolutely no legitimacy criticizing the work of people who are by far more competent than me in computer sciences, so I won't feel offended if you point out that I am totally wrong. sincerey yours, -- Ernest Galbrun

unordered_map failing to compile on MSVC7.1 using STLport

For some reason, I get the following compiler error on Visual Studio .NET 2003 when using STLport 5.2.1: boost\unordered\detail\allocator_helpers.hpp(318) : error C2039: 'select_on_container_copy_construction' : is not a member of 'stlpd_std::allocator<_Tp>' Any idea why this is happening? Move semantics for std::string?

I'm using C++03 and would love some way to apply move semantics to a std::string. Can boost facilitate this in some way without using smart pointers? Consider an example like below (This is a contrived example, so assume NRVO does not apply): std::string GetInformation( int someNumber ) { // We use 'someNumber' to look up a string std::string myValue( "hello world" ); // Create the string here return myValue; } Above, the return value would result in a copy, I'd like to move it instead. --------- Robert Dailey

boost thread rev 77005 fails on cygwin due SIGSTKSZ not defined

Can't build boost 1.48 with STLport 5.2.1

I'm trying to get Boost 1.48 building using STLport 5.2.1. I am on Windows 7 x64. Here is what I've done: 1. Update tools/build/v2/user-config.jam with the following: using msvc : 7.1 ; using stlport : 5.2.1 : C:/Code/third_party_source/STLport-5.2.1/stlport : C:/Code/third_party_source/STLport-5.2.1/lib ; 2. Run the following command through the VS2003 command line tool: bootstrap.bat 3. This sets up the b2 executable and stuff, after that I run: b2 toolset=msvc link=shared threading=multi runtime-link=shared variant=debug stdlib=stlport --layout=tagged stage However, once it comes time to link the first library (boost filesystem), I get a ton of linker errors, mostly LNK2001 relating to unresolved STLport symbols. Here is one of the first ones: path.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "__declspec(dllimport) public: __thiscall stlpd _std::basic_string<wchar_t,class stlpd_std::char_traits<wchar_t>,class stlpd_std::allocator<wchar_t> >::basic_string<wchar_t,class stlpd_std::char_traits<wchar_t>,class stlpd_std::allocator<wchar_t> > (class stlpd_std::basic_string<wchar_t,class stlpd_std::char_traits<wchar_t>,class stlpd_std::alloca tor<wchar_t> > const &)" (__imp_??0?$basic_string@_WV?$char_traits@ _W@stlpd_std@@V?$allocator@_W@2@@ stlpd_std@@QAE@ABV01@@Z) Anyone have any idea how I can get this working? --------- Robert Dailey

Boost.Asio documentation needs to be updated

All, The documentation states that Boost.Asio requires __USE_W32_SOCKETS must be defined when using Cygwin. That doesn't seem to be true any longer. When I define __USE_W32_SOCKETS compilation of several components (e.g. ./boost/test/impl/debug.ipp) fail with "error: '::select' has not been declared". Without that definition compilation works apparently fine. Regards, -- Bernd

[Block Pointer] Questions?
