Suggestion: link to the libraries page not easy to find
Hi Boost team, I don't know where to put this suggestion. Even if boost is now well known, I think in the boost's home page there should be a well visible, easy to find, link to http://www.boost.org/libs/libraries.htm because this is exactly what boost is about, I think. Best Regards, Marcello

Are you aware that Libraries -> Documentation -> Current Release links to this page, or do you think the label is unclear? I think it might be slighly more user-friendly if Documentation were a direct link to the libraries page, and Nightly CVS were a separate entry under Documentation, but this is a minor point. Nightly CVS seems to be pretty useless at the moment since most of the links are broken. Jonathan

It is the very first link in left top corner (named Current release). /Pavel

Thank you for both nice answers. I definitely must be tired. Or maybe for a person knowing where to go it is obvious, but not for the other people, When I read *Libraries *. Documentation: Current release <http://www.boost.org/libs/libraries.htm> Nightly CVS <http://www.boost.org/regression-logs/cs-win32_metacomm/doc/html/libraries.html> I felt that those were links to specific tecnical informations about the current release and how to get the cvs, .... I think that 'Nightly CVS <http://www.boost.org/regression-logs/cs-win32_metacomm/doc/html/libraries.html>'' is misleading and made me to think that also Current release <http://www.boost.org/libs/libraries.htm> was a link to documentation about how to download boos stuff .... So I didn't even went there, and I tried other links. Maybe instead than Current release <http://www.boost.org/libs/libraries.htm> the name Libraries listing would be better. Or maybe to make Documentation itself a link would be helpful. This time I also clicked on 'Nightly CVS <http://www.boost.org/regression-logs/cs-win32_metacomm/doc/html/libraries.html>' and I was really surprised to read Chapter 1. The Boost C++ Libraries etc, etc, I don't know a better name but definitely not 'Nightly CVS <http://www.boost.org/regression-logs/cs-win32_metacomm/doc/html/libraries.html>' I am ignorant and I tend to think that 'Nightly CVS <http://www.boost.org/regression-logs/cs-win32_metacomm/doc/html/libraries.html>' is referring to how to get the last changes in the repository. Just my personal opinion. Please ignore it if it doesn't make sense. Best Regards, Marcello
I'm likely completely missing the mark, but if I see a link called "Documentation," that's what I expect to find there, not code libraries (ignoring any arguments concerning "self-documenting code" for the nonce). In other words, (sorry for the C, but doing it in C++ obfuscated the poor pun), Documentation = *RTFM; I'd expect to see links to both "Boost Libraries" and "Boost Documentation" at the same (top) level, even if the libraries *include* the documentation. Or is it just me? Not the first time I'll have been self-referential. Geez, got to stop writing these before the morning coffee. Reid

<snipped> The libraries page *is* a collection of links to documentation, not to the source code. Yeah, I know. And I'd argue that that's poor labeling to begin with. Wouldn't you expect to find libraries under something called "Libraries?" However, I wasn't trying to start a flame war, and I don't have the page open to check it right now, either. If I'm wrong here, I apologize. I was just tossing out a quick comment on-the-fly while doing six other things, which usually isn't a good idea. Reid

Maybe, but I think we have a real problem.

Yeah, I think the current organization is pretty confusing. I suggest one top-level link: Documentation - points to complete docs for latest release A link to the up-to-date docs for the CVS should be hidden away (slightly) on the page targeted by the above link. It could be either: Generated Docs (Nightly Build) - points to subset of docs that are generated from boostbook sources, with a clear note at the top of the link's target page saying that it's only a subset of the complete docs or, better: Nightly CVS docs - Integrates the boostbook docs rebuilt nightly with a the docs that are stored in CVS as HTML, yielding a page with the same format as the "Documentation" page. The non-boostbook docs can be acquired via nightly download or simply linked-to using CVSWeb. -- Dave Abrahams Boost Consulting www.boost-consulting.com

Flame war? That's a bit of an overreaction. I just thought from your message that you didn't know libraries.html was the page containing links to documentation for the various libraries.
If I'm wrong here, I apologize. I was just tossing out a quick comment on-the-fly while doing six other things, which usually isn't a good idea.

And now, looking at the page finally, I retract my comments. I was mis-remembering the layout, which I have gotten lost in before. As it is now, I don't misread it. Apologies for any ruffled fur. Reid

Naw, not an over-reaction, just a poor choice of words. And elsewhere I've retracted my original comment on the grounds that it was unfounded, so the point floats to mootness. I really was too tired to be writing even simple posts like this when I did, and I apologize. Reid

Although I elsewhere and severally retracted my original comments as being slightly to the left of reality, I think the organization you suggest is somewhat better than the existing one. So one person throws his nickle on the grass for this one, in any event. Reid

OK, I implemented something like this. The generated docs link is on the getting_started page with the other CVS info. Should appear at http://boost-consulting.com/boost/more/getting_started.html#CVS within the hour. Note that the home page has "Libraries" and "Documentation" links that point to the same place. I just thought some people would be more comfortable if there were a link called "Documentation" on the home page. -- Dave Abrahams Boost Consulting www.boost-consulting.com
