 You are right, it is not as simple as I thought.

 I attached bug2119_demo.cc which produces a compiler error on g++ (version
 4.3.0 20080428, Red Hat 4.3.0-8). The compiler output is attached, too
 (ignore the deprecate warning in the beginning).

 Perhaps it is a complier bug.  Could you check?
