 The test program in that report doesn't seem to exhibit the problem here,
 but the description of the problem sounds plausible.

 Since it's hard for me to reproduce the problem, I changed our code to
 ensure that close() and write() are never called simultaneously, and will
 check with the user later if he still has the problem.
