 For what it's worth, I converted the variant tree example to the latest
 boost version 1.49.0, and it turned out that there's a way to get it
 working without a need for patching the source.  The latest example is
 uploaded as attachment.

 Following this thread I do like the schema idea, but this is definitely
 not a bug request.
