 Tried the async timer approach, but could never get that to work on our
 application which has to read from one thread and reply on the same socket
 on another thread. Yeah, tried strands, but it wouldn't work.

 So synchronous would be nice, simply because synchronous UDP operations
 are supposed to be thread safe.
