 This patch does not fix all the binary compatibility problems. I have a
 file serialized with 1.35.1 that cannot be read by 1.53 when it is in
 binary format. Converting that file to text (compressed or not) allows the
 serialization to correctly read it. The file is too large to attach here,
 but you can contact me if a copy would be helpful.
