Comment:

 I strongly agree with Jonathan Wakely on this matter. It is something I
 have wanted to improve for quite some time.

 I want to go slightly further since there are other member functions that
 make sense for bidirectional traversal and then some more for
 random_access traversal. I'll clean this all up in one iteration.
