 hmm ... could be a compiler bug ... fwiw, gcc-4.4 has been released 5
 years ago and hasn't received any updates for the last 2 years. so i tend
 to close it as wontfix, though i'd happily accept a patch ...

 do you have a strong requirement to use gcc-4.4 and no other/newer gcc?
