Comment:

 I just built 1.57 from source with your patch applied and re-ran my test.
 I'm still seeing lots of empty files being left behind in the log
 directories. There are not as many: it's about a dozen new empty files per
 run now (instead of hundreds). But the problem isn't completely fixed yet,
 it seems.
