 The min_free_space setting avoids the problem, thanks for that tip!

 I still believe I shouldn't have to set this though. It's certainly non-
 obvious that leaving it unset can cause empty log files to accumulate, in
 particular since it is highly unlikely that people would ever notice
 during testing.
