 I am the OP - thank you for this. As always for me, when I compiled the
 Boost libraries I got messages of the sort "skipping optional Message
 Passing Interface (MPI) library", but this has never been a problem
 before, and I didn't see any indication that this was an MPI problem. Re-
 assigning the ticket to MPI.
