Doesn't seem like you'd have any other choice.

Since you are testing the test system I'd say you have two choices:
status/test... or
tools/build/test/(status, or testing?)
You might want to take a look at the Python testing stuff Vladimir wrote. It
might help to reduce the testing burden.
