How to pass extra options to the compiler?

Reading the documentation, I thought this would work
to pass an additional option to gcc:

bjam -sTOOLS="gcc" -sBUILD="<gcc><*><cxxflags>-fabi-version=0"

But it doesn't.

Substituting "gcc" with "como" throughout works (i.e. the option
comes through to the command line).

Do I have to add some more <*> in between for gcc?

I'm confused.
