Ok. I've done a checkout with -D 2003-07-10 and rebuild bjam.
I've just realised that I should have tried -D 2003-07-11, because I now 
have the status of 2003-07-09. If this is the case, I'll try that again 
on Monday and report again.

It reports Version 3.1.6, but this seems ok.

Well, this version uses 251 MB and works fine.
