First of all, there's some confusion which needs to be cleared out. Mark 
original post clearly quoted documentation for Boost.Build V2, and Michael 
seems to talk about gcc-tools.jam which is part of V1. 

I'll comment only on V2 now.

Mark, it seems what you're trying to do is custom build variants. The current 
CVS has an example of this, under "example/variant". In case you don't have 
CVS version yet, you can browse the example at
