I just tried to compile python-2.3.4 on HPUX 11.22i (Itanium) and it
does not work out-of-the-box (but the issue looks only to be a minor
problem).

Yes and no. HP provides a precompiled gcc that (usually) works but
compiling gcc yourself on HP is a hell of a job.
