Newbie question: Installing Boost with mingw

Hello everyone!

I've recently joined the list, because I am having some trouble with the
installation of Boost with mingw.

I've followed the "Getting Started" tutorial up to the step where he tells
me that I must set up some variables before calling bjam.exe.

I used the following command line:

bjam -sMINGW_ROOT_DIRECTORY=<mingw_root>

And it attempted to call many things involving Visual Studio .NET, witch I
don't even have installed on my machine.

Then it has show a lot of errors (command not found, etc.) and finally,

..failed to update xxx targets....
etc.

What am I doing wrong? Can someone give me some light?
