I found another way to do this by using the shell's
printf command (it chops off newlines). For example:

local dir = [ SHELL "printf \"%s\" `apxs2 -q
INCLUDEDIR`" ] ;

It works fine for this example, but somehow bjam
removes whitespaces int the result of printf, so it's
use is limited.
