Building with "lapack=source" and --debug-building reveals this:

   Building target 'lapack/lapack'
        ...
        Target requirements:  <find-shared-library>lapack <lapack>vendor ...

So it appears that lapack=source arrives to the target just fine, but
then alternative selection selects not exactly the alternative you wanted.
I'll see what solutions are possible here.
