I vaguely remember an issue with bjam and gcc4.

Could you possibly try with bjam from trunk?
You need only to check out tools/bjam subdir. You should be able to
compile this alone, i.e. without other parts of boost needed.

But then you said you tried with gcc3.x also. Hmm...
