Hi Mat,

you have written a detailed summary of your findings. At the
moment I have not enough time to respond to all questions/statements.

But let me ask two simple questions:

1) What do you expect how the build system should select
   default values for:
   <host-os>
   <target-os>
   <threadapi> (in case multiple API's are available)
   <architecture>
   <instruction-set>
   <address-model>

2) How should the build system disambiguate ABI incompatible
   variants of built targets?
   *) extend mangling of names?
   *) put them into separate directories?
   *) other ?!

Boost Build currently has it's (established) set of conventions,
which seem to go against your expectations. But always can be
overriden by explicit user request.

Before these answers are not answered, I see no hope for
"improving" anything.

In case you already have answered them implicitly, please bear
with me, I simply have not understood yet. Please try to be
explicit.

Thank you.

Ah, and please don't cross post.
