We're actually using version 6:
VisualAge C++ Professional / C for AIX Compiler, Version 6

Unfortunately, we can't upgrade it because of continuity reasons.

That's a very old compiler, isn't it?  I know things work much better  
with version 7.0 and later.  Any chance you can move up to a newer  
version?
