Uhm, I am not sure this is what `foobar` does, per:

        http://www.gnu.org/software/bash/manual/html_node/Command-Substitution.html#Command-Substitution

it removes trailing newlines, but I cannot see anything about stripping
line.

I think that removing trailing newline is clearly the right thing -- any objections
if I just do it, unconditionally?
