Fixed.  It is safest to just wipe your clone and start fresh.
You should see:

% git clone git://gitorious.org/boost/cmake.git

% git checkout -b 1.40.0 origin/1.40.0
Branch 1.40.0 set up to track remote branch refs/remotes/origin/1.40.0.
Switched to a new branch "1.40.0"

% git log -n1
commit a1bf4d525d2cfde1f3a901f6c4c1c3d03adffe11
