Just thinking about the original aim:

    [template std_def[] [block '''<para role="std_definition">''']]

It might be better to do something similar to source modes, so that
you can write:

    [!role std_def]
    Defintion content.

I'm not sure if that makes sense, partly because the normal 'role' and
source mode elements work in very different ways.
