Hi Christian, Stefan,

The new IO received some complains about the use of assertions:

I have been trying to provide an objective feedback, but I am not
the author of the extension, so I'm not able to offer the users
any explanation about the rationale behind using assertions
for checks like `fread` or `fwrite` results.

You may prefer to offer the user additional feedback.
