Yep and that's how I'm running them now. 

I just don't feel that should be stricly necessary (it
doesn't bother me though). 

Besides, the bjam and process_jam_log compilation
still fails with short paths on both the systems I've
tried (WinXP SP2). And yes the environment variables
were properly set.
