I tried this once for a few tests, but it didn't help any on those.

I've put a fix into CVS HEAD, but don't hold your breath: OSL4 is  
running the latest pre-release of the Sun compiler, and it looks  
pretty ugly. If this fix did anything, we should see a big  
improvement on HEAD in a day or two.
