I'm assuming its left over from an older API. That leads into a question I
had had, maybe unsure-ness is more accurate. It seems strange to pass in
&any_ob if I want a pointer out, and any_ob if I want a reference. I can't
exactly say it's wrong because <reason>, it just seems like a hidden
feature. Slightly non-intuitive.
