You've hit an OS limit.  See
http://pauillac.inria.fr/~xleroy/linuxthreads/faq.html, FAQ D.9.  I'm
assuming the library detected this and through a
boost::thread_resource_error which you failed to catch resulting in the
SIGABRT?
