There are definitely descriptions of use of Boost with each of the major
compilers. When there are version-dependent specifics, I think there would
be something said when needed.

I know I saw somewhere that the zip format is in the format you describe and
that the other format (gz and/or tar or whatever) is in the format more
convenient for Unix and Linux. If you download from SourceForge then I think
it is clear enough. If you did not download from SourceForge then look there
to see if it is made clear enough.
