In my youth I found "Compilers" by Alfred V. Aho, Ravi Sethi,
Jeffrey D. Ullman useful
(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0201100886/qid=1119968544
/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-1607349-4401717?v=glance&s=books&n=507846).
Andrew Appel has a book on the subject which I dislike, "Modern
Compiler Implementation in C".
