some suggestons: you might try:

a) building with bjam - this has all the compile/link switches set up to 
work.
b) taking a look at the *.sln and *.vcproj files included in the package and 
comparing your setup with that one (assuming you're using the VC 7.1 IDE)
c) double check the recent manual under compiler specific issues to see if 
it mentions anything that might be helpful.
