Well I presume you've already tried turning off the unicode option but I
would try recompiling with the setting 'Use Multi-Byte Character Set'
and also have 'Treat wchar_t as Built-in Type' set to No. The unicode
setting doesn't affect the char *'s, but could certainly affect what
happens when you create a std::string from one without explicitly
setting a size/allocator. I agree with James that a mismatch between
these settings is a very likely cause.
