My friend, you need to read a book on C++. Specifically, it is obvious 
that your understanding of pointers is incomplete.

I can recommend "The C++ Programming Language" but I have been told that 
it is not a good recommendation for people new to the language (I used 
it, so I don't see the big deal!)

Don't get caught into trial-and-error programming. It is really the worst 
method of programming. Even more than not programming!
