well, I didn't go through the whole thing.  But don't anywhere a variant is 
being serialized.

Look at test variant.

Try the following:

typedef boost::variant<int,std::string> my_var_t;
typedef std::vector<my_var_t> my_vector_t;

my_vector_t v;
...

ar << v;
