I don't know what you mean by "worked". Your usage of "--build-type" could
never have any effect on anything.

The Boost.Build invocation is documented at:

        http://www.boost.org/boost-build2/doc/html/bbv2/advanced/invocation.html

and one of the example shows how to request specific values of the properties,
including "variant=debug".
