Depends how you use the value.
// Safe.
puts(boost::lexical_cast<std::string>(myNumericVar).c_str());
const char* s = boost::lexical_cast<std::string>(myNumericVar).c_str();
// Don't do this! Here 's' is a dangling pointer; the string has already
// been destroyed.
puts(s);
