There is an easy, albeit non-obvious, workaround for the initiated: 
use github gists for submitting patches.

See https://github.com/ned14/nedmalloc/issues/1 for an example sticky 
note telling people using Github issues what to do. I agree for any 
substantial patch a pull request from a fork is much easier.
