Could you also tell your mail program to put a reference header 
when replying to a message ? The syntax is:

Reference: message-id of the message you are replying to, 
   all the content of the header Reference of the message 
   you are replying to

The size is constant, it doesn't depend on the particular 
instance, so turn rangecheck into a static private function, 
for better encapsulation and to ensure that array remains 
an aggregate.
