We have been having discussions about this idea in general for some
time -- since it has been coming up on this list now, we were talking
about it in particular this week. Real work along these lines is
likely to start fairly soon.

I do like the idea of extra person-power! Indeed, lack thereof is
what has slowed MTL development over the last few years. I will
discuss this with the rest of my lab (most of whom are reading this
now anyway).

Well, let's call what we have right now (the unreleased MTL that may
grow into MTL 3.0) "MTL 2.99" -- that is layered in this way. We
have been quite careful to separate concerns. Much of the recent
work in MTL 2.99 has been in getting the concepts (and the layers of
concepts) right.
