It kind-of worked on one of my browsers, but my other browser got worse.
The effect you describe is very browser-dependent. The "<pre>" tags are
block-level and guarantee no-extra breaks, unlike the text-level <code> tag.
I'm not sure there's a good way to get what you want, so I put to HTML code
back to the way I had it at first for now.
