You are correct on both accounts, if you restrict yourself to the
IMPLEMENTATIONS they provide (and they do say this right up front, in
the introduction); their code is specifically aimed at a pedagogical
level, not a production level. However, I would recommend NR as a very
useful text for understanding the issues related to the various
algorithms (not just for fft's, but in most other numerical arenas) as
well as the more general issues raised in numerical computation; if you
aren't pursuing a degree in numerical methods, you probably don't need
to go beyond the level of information included in NR.
I'd also point out that it's the first link recommended on the fftw.org
list of "Explanatory Material" :-)
