Yes. Sounds like a good approach to me.

Attributes like "is_directory" really should be supported on all 
platforms.  Just return false if the platform doesn't support directories.

Would someone like to volunteer to take Jan's table (attached, if 
YahooGroups doesn't drop it) and discover the Win32 and Mac equivalents?
