Okay, the default compiler on Debian is

     2.95.4 20011002 (Debian Prerelease)
                             ^^^^^^^^^^

And it has trouble with -foptimize-sibling-calls. What is up with these
Linux vendors?? Redhat ships 2.96, Debian ships 2.95.4 as though it didn't
matter!

OK, I'm going to patch the release branch to leave this option off.
