Sorry it took so long... I'd forgotten that *nix is case sensitive and 
couldn't figure out why
bjam -s"tools=VC7"
kept trying to use all the compilers instead of just VC7
at any rate when I finally typed
bjam -s"TOOLS=VC7" it built regex, then started getting errors on python... 
here's one of the errors
