When I was experimenting with this, as we discussed this topic during my
initial submission, I was able to achieve the effect of calling different
function by debug and release versions, probably because of inlining, by
VC7.1 (although it was not related to the typeof).  Scary...

On the other hand, automatic registration can make it attractive to use the
library in many cases where it is currently not.  Do you think it's possible
to create a test case that would test this more or less fully?
