AFAIK your assumption is wrong.

The only problem with QueryPerformanceCounter() is that it can "jump"
on some chipsets. A good idea is to use a "control timer" with lower
frequency (or just timeBeginPeriod() + timeGetTime(), if its precision
is good enough for the task).
