That's not true. Even the so-called "Neue Deutsche Rechtschreibung" uses
eszett after long vowels and after diphthongs. ("aß", "schließen" vs.
"essen", "Schloss"), except for Switzerland where generally "ss" is
used. However, adding to the confusion, the Germany army uses "SZ"
(which, in some sense, is correct. However, it doesn't match any modern
spelling).
